Talking with Centennial Coach Matt Logan after his No. 2 Huskies lost to No. 1 Mater Dei, 51-37, Thursday night at Santa Ana Stadium, he said his team got exactly what it came for, most notably some intense preparation for Mountain View League play, which doesn’t begin until Week 7 for the Huskies with a game at Corona Santiago on Oct. 19.
What surprised him most about Mater Dei’s game plan was its commitment to the run.
‘They hadn’t shown that,’ he said. ‘But that’s Mater Dei football.’
Centennial running back Ryan Bass (pictured left) thought the Huskies proved something to themselves, as well as those who reside in the Outland Empire.
‘I think tonight we proved we’re a great team,’ he said. ‘Of course it hurts [to lose], but we’ll keep playing hard the rest of the season.’
On the other side of the field, Mater Dei Coach Bruce Rollinson was breathing a sigh of relief. The Monarchs absorbed all they could handle from Centennial.
‘We made just enough plays to win the football game,’ he said.
Yea, the referees made a strange call after Centennial recovered a fumble during a Monarch kickoff return seconds after the Huskies had taken a one-point lead in the third quarter. The turnover was wiped out by off-setting facemask penalties, which appeared to come after the whistle. But this is one of those games that I think Mater Dei wins seven of 10 times, regardless. The Monarchs are that good.
Both teams deserve a pat on the back and there’s probably not enough game balls to go around.
