The top American finisher Monday at the Boston Marathon was none other than Nick Arciniaga, a kid I covered for The Times Orange County Edition a few years ago while he was running for Fountain Valley High.

Arciniaga, 24, finished 10th overall in 2 hours 16 minutes 13 seconds, about nine minutes behind the winner.

Arciniaga, who now calls Rochester Hills, Mich., home, almost never made it to the starting line after he was nearly run over four months ago while on a training run. Here’s a report on that episode.

Also, here’s a little bio on Arciniaga when he was serving as an assistant coach at Fountain Valley, and his training blog. Looks as if he’s on his way to achieving his goal of running in the 2008 Olympics.
