Girls’ basketball: Bishop Amat pulls off the upset

Fifth-seeded Bishop Amat hit some clutch free throws down the stretch to upset third-seeded Inglewood, 56-54, in the Southern California Regional Division III championship on Saturday at USC.

Inglewood’s Hazel Ramirez hit two free throws with 1:40 left in the game to give the Sentinels a 54-53 lead. Then Arielle Wideman, Andrea Villanueva and Leticia Galarza made one free throw apiece to give Bishop Amat the victory.

Wideman and Galarza scored 17 points for Bishop Amat. DeAjanae Scurry led Inglewood with 18 points.

Bishop Amat converted 72% of its free throws, while Inglewood only made 47.4%.

In the teams’ last meeting in the Southern Section Division 3AA semifinals, Inglewood won 63-48 by killing Bishop Amat on the boards. This time around, Bishop Amat out-rebounded Inglewood 37-35.

Bishop Amat will make an appearance in the state final for the first time since a loss to San Francisco Sacred Heart Cathedral in 2007.
