A 72-year-old man lost control of his car in a Ralphs supermarket parking lot in Glendale Friday, and the vehicle killed an elderly woman and injured another before slamming into the store’s entryway, police said.
Mary Haymaker, 79, of Glendale, died from massive head injuries at Glendale Adventist Medical Center an hour after she was struck while walking across the parking lot with her groceries, Sgt. Warren Dreyer said.
The accident occured about 12:40 p.m. when Eric Wells, also of Glendale, apparently entered the supermarket’s parking lot on East Glenoaks Boulevard. He lost control of his car, which hit Haymaker, throwing the woman about 40 feet.
Another pedestrian, June Khey, 79, of Glendale, was also struck by the car and suffered a sprained wrist. The car then crashed into the store’s entrance, breaking a water pipe and several windows.
