SAN DIEGO — The Carlsbad High School basketball team was hot and cold in its Avocado League game at Escondido Saturday, but the Lancers were hottest when it counted most--at the end of the game.
Trailing by eight points with two minutes remaining, Carlsbad (10-4, 3-0) scored 12 of the contest’s final 14 points to beat Escondido, 52-50.
Carlsbad opened the game with a 10-0 run before cooling off and falling behind, 25-22, at halftime. Escondido (1-9, 0-2) led, 37-30, after three quarters and 48-40 with two minutes to play.
Carlsbad’s Tim Smith scored the winning basket when he took a pass from teammate Eric Bodman and hit a jumper from the foul line with two seconds remaining in the game. Smith finished with 14 points in the game. Bodman added 10. Rick White led the Lancers with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Escondido’s Darrin Sommer led all scorers with 31 points.
