German’s Trial Opens

BONN — Former Inner-German Affairs Minister Egon Franke went on trial Monday on charges of misappropriating government money, which he says was spent on secret deals to buy freedom for political prisoners in East Germany. Franke, 72, a Social Democrat, and his former chief aide are accused of destroying or suppressing documents to hide where the $2.12 million in public funds went.
