London Reportedly Suits Soviet Leader

LONDON — Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev has had at least three suits made for him on London’s Savile Row by Britain’s most prestigious firm of men’s tailors, the Daily Mail reported Tuesday.
The newspaper said that Gieves and Hawkes, tailors to the English aristocracy for 200 years, has acquired the Soviet leader as a new client. But Robert Gieves, the senior partner in the firm, declined to confirm the report.
“Our client list spans royalty around the world, statesmen and other men in powerful positions,” he said. “Just like I wouldn’t discuss that we make suits for Mr. Thatcher (Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s husband Denis) or the Duke of Edinburgh, I can’t say any more on that.”
