Chancellor Richard Atkinson of the University of California, San Diego, agreed to pay up to $275,000 to former Harvard Prof. Lee Perry, who accused him of having first impregnated her and then tricked her into having an abortion on the promise that he would father a child by her at some later date. The settlement, approved by San Diego Superior Court, requires Atkinson to pay Perry $125,000 within 30 days, another $125,000 by Oct. 5--and perhaps another $25,000 later. Atkinson continued to deny all charges, however. His attorney said Atkinson merely wished to avoid the expense and uncertainty of litigation, and “he and his wife wished to put the matter behind them.”
