Australia III won Thursday’s race in the world 12-meter competition, surging home ahead of a battered fleet that had three crewmen washed overboard, a dismasting and ripped sails.
All three crewmen--one from America II, one from Italia and one from New Zealand Kz3--were rescued from the heavy seas driven by a 20-knot wind off Fremantle, Australia.
Subject to protests, French Kiss was second to finish, 1 minute 4 seconds behind Australia III, followed by New Zealand Kz5. Canada’s True North, Australia II and America II were next in line.
