Birmingham Wins Wild-Card Game in Overtime on Owens’ Tip-In, 57-56

Keith Owens’ tip-in with 26 seconds left in overtime gave Birmingham High a 57-56 Northwest Valley League playoff victory over Chatsworth on Wednesday.
The win gave Birmingham (10-10 overall, 5-5 in league) sole possession of third place in league and a playoff berth. The Braves play Venice on Friday night in the first round.
The basket by Owens capped an impressive comeback in a wild-card game that saw Birmingham rebound from a 48-34 deficit with seven minutes left.
Birmingham outscored the Chancellors, 19-5, during the rally. Shawn Jones hit a fall-away jumper from five feet with 37 seconds left to tie the game at 53 and send it into overtime.
Guard Benny Carrasco scored seven points during the fourth-quarter run, while Chatsworth (8-9, 5-5) committed seven turnovers during a five-minute span. Chatsworth forward George Powdrill, who scored 11 points in the first half, was called for charging once and traveling four times.
Owens scored a team-high 19 points for the Braves. Neil Coffman led Chatsworth with 20 points.
