Oil imports rose 26% last month from a year earlier.

The American Petroleum Institute said January’s increase in imports of crude oil and petroleum products reflected the sharp drop in world prices. The industry group said last month’s imports were up 1.079 million barrels a day to a level of 5.233 million barrels. API reported that domestic production of crude was 8.95 million barrels a day in January, up 3.1% from a year earlier.
