India signed a major deal with Control Data.

Minister of State for Science and Technology Shivraj Patil told Parliament that India will pay the U.S. firm $9.5 million for the technology transfer as well as a 5% royalty on sales. An Indian agent for the American company said the contract, whose long-term value could be as much as $500 million, signaled the first big transfer of foreign technology since India announced a liberal computer policy almost a year ago. The deal involved importing components of 30 prototype mainframe computers for assembly and subsequent production over an eight-year period.
