ITALIAN ART, CULTURE FESTIVAL

A “Festival of Italian Art and Culture,” today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., complements the Macchiaioli exhibition at UCLA.

A symposium, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. in Dickson Auditorium, features speakers Giovanni Cecchetti on “Italian Literature and the Macchiaioli,” Alessandro Falassi on “Italian Culture and Traditions of the 19th Century,” William Holmes on “19th-Century Italian Opera and the Macchiaioli” and Edward Maeder on “The Red Shirts: Costume of 19th-Century Italy.”

Albert Boime, a UCLA professor and catalogue essayist, will talk about “Art and Nationalism in 19th-Century Italy” at 3 p.m. in the gallery.

Performances of dance, music, street theater and puppets will take place outside from 3 to 5 p.m., and Lucino Visconti’s film, “Senso,” featuring Macchiaioli-inspired sets, will be screened at 2:30 p.m. in Melnitz Theatre.

Docents will offer tours of the exhibition, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., every half hour except at 3 p.m. Italian food will be available from 2:30 to 5 p.m. in the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden.
