Bonner in Hospital for Leg Artery Tests

BOSTON — Soviet dissident Yelena Bonner entered a hospital Sunday for tests to determine whether she will need an operation on her clogged leg arteries.
Bonner, the wife of dissident Soviet physicist Andrei D. Sakharov, is recovering well from heart surgery performed here in January, her son-in-law, Efrem Yankelevich, said.
She will undergo tests at Massachusetts General Hospital because not enough blood is circulating to nourish Bonner’s legs, hospital spokesman Martin Bander said.
Soviet officials granted Bonner an extension of her three-month visa last month so she could finish her medical treatment in Massachusetts. Her trip to the West was permitted in November after Sakharov held several hunger strikes on her behalf.
