A 25-year-old man died early Thursday morning when his pickup truck crashed into a traffic signal pole and burst into flames, police said.
Sgt. Bud Lathrop said the fire engulfed the truck’s cab and made impossible any attempt at rescuing Steven Robert Duncan of Buena Park.
Lathrop said witnesses reported seeing Duncan driving his 1974 Dodge pickup “erratically,” traveling about 50 miles per hour westbound on Commonwealth Avenue and weaving across lanes at about 1:15 a.m.
When the truck entered the Magnolia Avenue intersection, the vehicle drifted to the right and hit the pole “without reducing speed,” Lathrop said. Witnesses said the cab immediately exploded into flames, according to Lathrop.
