Ernie Chavez, an amateur welterweight boxer from Garden Grove, suffered a broken leg in a hit-and-run accident Monday at Beaumont, Tex., the day he was to fight Robert McCrary Jr. of the Air Force in an evening first-round bout of the 147-pound class at the U.S. Championships.
