British officials urged Protestants in Northern Ireland to halt a campaign of violence and discuss solutions to the crisis resulting from the Anglo-Irish agreement that gives the Irish Republic a voice in the troubled province. The appeal followed a night of clashes between Protestant mobs and police and firebomb attacks on Roman Catholic targets.
