Top-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd will meet second-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany today in the final round of the $150,000 Tournament of Champions at Marco Island, Fla.
“She’s the only player in the world that I haven’t beaten, so, of course, it would be very, very special to beat her,” Kohde-Kilsch said.
In Saturday’s semifinals, Lloyd defeated Bonnie Gadusek, 6-1, 6-1, and Kohde-Kilsch beat Janine Thompson of Australia, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
“I’ve played her before, and we’ve had closer matches, and she’s been more patient,” Lloyd said of Gadusek. “In the first game she started going for winners at too early a stage. That is not characteristic of her. She is normally very patient.”
At Atlanta, Tim Wilkison saved game points against him in the final two games to beat David Pate, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, in the semifinals of the $279,000 WCT championships.
Wilkinson, who upset Wimbledon winner Boris Becker earlier in the tournament, will play Kevin Curren for the championship. Curren defeated Brian Teacher, 6-4, 6-2, in the other semifinal. Today’s winner will earn $44,000; the runner-up will receive $22,000.
