Williams Quits as Troy Coach

Mike Williams, who guided Troy High School boys’ basketball team to its first Freeway League championship in seven seasons in 1986, said Tuesday he is taking a leave of absence from the school to pursue “other career interests.”
Williams, 31, said Fullerton Union School District Assistant Superintendent Dr. Greg Bice accepted his request for a one-year leave of absence Friday. Williams was 38-34 in three seasons at Troy.
Williams, who taught health and physical education at Troy, said he will pursue a career in real estate. His one-year leave takes effect at the end of the school year.
“The decision stems from my economic situation,” Williams said. “Staying in the field of education would make it hard for my wife and I to start a family, which is what we want to do.”
Williams added that he doubts he will return to Troy.
