Santa Monica-based Lear Siegler reported that sales for the third quarter ended March 31 rose 5% to $591.8 million from year-ago quarter. Net earnings fell 30% to $17.3 million. The company said net income was increased by $2 million because of a change in the way the company accounts for pension expenses. Lear Siegler said it will take a pretax charge during the fourth quarter of between $50 million and $100 million to provide for Piper Aircraft product liabilities involving aircraft manufactured in previous years.
