San Diego College Baseball : San Diego State Scores 14 in an Inning En Route to Sweep

San Diego State swept a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader from Brigham Young Friday night at Smith Field to move into a tie for second place with the Cougars in the WAC’s Southern Division.

The Aztecs, who have won nine straight, scored 14 times in the first inning of the first game en route to a 19-5 win. SDSU (10-8 in conference, 31-20-1 overall) won the second game, 12-2. BYU, ranked No. 11 in the country, is 10-8, 30-16-2.

In the first game, BYU took a 2-0 lead on back-to-back home runs by Gary Cooper and Jeff Brown in the first. In the bottom of the first, the Aztecs had seven hits, eight walks and benefited from three Cougar errors to score 14 runs.

Deron Johnson went 4 for 5 in the first game and Rob Angus had two hits and five RBIs. Richard Holsman (3-2) went the distance with 10 strikeouts.

In the second game, Nikco Riesgo homered in the third inning to snap a 2-2 tie and SDSU scored six more runs in the fifth inning. Riesgo also doubled and tripled in the game and drove in five runs.

Steve Mills (3-0) shut out BYU over the last four innings to pick up the win in relief.

Before its recent win streak, San Diego State appeared to be out of the WAC race. The Aztecs lost eight of their first nine conference games including three of four to BYU. The Aztecs have beaten Utah seven straight times before swept Friday’s doubleheader.

The Aztecs and Cougars will play another doubleheader at Smith Field at 4 p.m. today.

United States International University 5, Cal State Sacramento 2--Ian Kelly was 3 for 5 and Greg May was 2 for 4, including a home run and two RBIs to pace the Gulls (24-27) in the nonconference game at Sacramento. USIU starter Dean Weese (4-0) pitched 5 innings to earn the win. Mark Caravco was 2 for 4 to lead the Hornets. USIU has won 18 of its last 25 games.
