In new defiance of President Augusto Pinochet, civic leaders representing nearly 3 million Chileans launched a campaign of nonviolent disobedience aimed at paralyzing the country and ending military rule. The campaign ranges from blocking streets with protest marches to non-payment of millions of dollars in debts to government banks. It was announced by the National Assembly of Civilian Society, representing middle-class and white-collar organizations.
