A man driving a stolen car was pursued by police Friday from Newport Beach to Irvine, where he ran a red light and was killed instantly when he slammed into another car, authorities said.
Irvine Police Lt. Sam Allevato said the 10-minute chase began on Jamboree Road when Newport Beach police noticed the stolen 1982 Buick. The chase, which reached speeds of 75 m.p.h., continued on the 405 Freeway before the driver pulled off at Culver Drive. He proceeded north and ran the red light at the intersection of Culver Drive and Warner Avenue, Allevato said.
The driver, whose identity was being withheld pending notification of relatives, hit a 1983 Cadillac driven by Virginia Nicholas of Irvine, who was only slightly injured, Allevato said.
After hitting the Cadillac, the Buick veered into a bicyclist, Hsin Ling of Irvine. Ling was only slightly injured, Allevato said.
