Culver City : Restaurant Move a Step Nearer

The City Council has voted to certify the supplemental environmental impact report on a proposal to move Ship’s restaurant so the city can widen Overland Avenue and add a parking lot to the adjacent Culver Center shopping mall. The vote was 4 to 0 with council member Jozelle Smith abstaining because, she said, she had a financial interest in the decision.

The Redevelopment Agency, which was to decide at a public hearing Monday whether to condemn the 1950s-style diner, rescheduled the hearing for June 30 to give city staff members more time to prepare, according to a staff report.

The agency wants to move Ship’s from the corner of Washington Boulevard and Overland Avenue in order to widen Overland and improve traffic flow there. But some preservationists have opposed the plan.
