Newport Harbor celebrated a golden anniversary with a rerun of history.
When the newly dredged harbor was officially opened on May 23, 1936, a boat parade was launched on the cue of a telephone call from President Franklin D. Roosevelt in Washington.
On Friday, 50 years later, President Ronald Reagan made the call to Newport Beach that cued an anniversary boat parade.
Hundreds of sightseers jammed into the Newport Harbor area to watch the boats and the re-enactment of that historic ceremony from 1936.
