Rick Mears heads the field for today’s Michigan 500 at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich. Mears won the pole with a speed of 223.401 m.p.h., the fastest closed-course lap of all time, then spun and hit the wall in practice, putting his pole start in jeopardy. The car has been repaired, however.
