Boston Nurses Picket for Raise, Fewer Duties

BOSTON — Nurses waged a 24-hour strike against the city’s three hospitals Friday to press demands for higher wages and freedom from such non-medical duties as answering telephones and emptying wastebaskets.
About 100 nurses picketed the large Boston City Hospital and the city’s two small chronic-care hospitals, said Steve Mazur, spokesman for Local 285 of the Service Employees International Union, which represents the nurses. He said the nurses planned to return to work today.
The nurses are seeking a 13% raise for those at top scale, who now earn $14.90 an hour, and a 7% increase for most others, Mazur said.
