4 to Run for New 1st District Seat

The once long list of candidates seeking to represent the new 1st District on the Los Angeles City Council has been pared to four, a city clerk official said Tuesday.
Initially 19 people filed papers that indicated “intent” to run to represent the district, which covers parts of the Eastside and Northeast Los Angeles. But the candidates had to qualify for the ballot. Some withdrew and others did not collect the necessary number of valid voter signatures to qualify, said Bernard J. Barrett, chief of the Elections Division.
Candidates for the Feb. 3 election are Larry Gonzalez, school board member; Gloria Molina, an assemblywoman; Paul D. Y. Moore, businessman; and Leland Wong, community planner.
If one candidate does not receive a majority vote in February, a runoff between the top two candidates will be held, probably in April.
