Drunk-Driving Trial

Re your article “Woman Goes on Trial 2nd Time in Fatal Drunk-Driving Crash” (Dec. 6):
I was not only disgusted, I was totally outraged by the defense attorney’s statement: “She didn’t do anything worse than any of us have done on occasion when we got into a car.”
Somehow I was under the impression that driving with a blood alcohol level of .19%, almost double the the minimum that determines intoxication, was sufficient in and of itself to require extreme punishment. It is against the law.
It is particularly disturbing at this time of year, when the holiday season increases the number of drinking-related accidents. I shudder to think of the ramifications of such a defense.
