Democratic U.S. Sen. Alan Cranston officially defeated Republican Rep. Ed Zschau by 104,868 votes Nov. 4, almost 12,000 fewer than the unofficial tally in the California general election, Secretary of State March Fong Eu said. Her official canvass of the vote shows Cranston received 3,646,672 to Zschau’s 3,541,804. A spokeswoman explained that the latest figures are higher because the Nov. 5 unofficial canvass failed to count some absentee ballots in addition to those that had been damaged or temporarily misplaced. The report also showed Gov. George Deukmejian officially defeating Mayor Tom Bradley of Los Angeles by 50,589 more votes than the unofficial canvass. Deukmejian compiled 4,506,601 votes to Bradley’s 2,781,714.
