Oriental Arts : Flower With a Flair at Festival

Practitioners of Oriental arts demonstrated their skills at a two-day Chinese Cultural Festival at the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum in Arcadia. In photo at left, performing traditional Chinese fan dance, Margaret Yao, 7, of Arcadia contorts her face while holding up her end of the group’s routine. Other dancers are Sing Yi, 9, left, and Anne Chen, 11.

In the photo panel below, from left, Sandy Fung, 12, of Arcadia performs folk dances with other tambourine carriers; Steve Yang demonstrates Chinese writing, an art in itself, by making a holiday sign that speaks of good health for the coming year; and Yin-Jing Shu, left, and Wen-Hsing Yen admire one of many artificial flower arrangements on display.

The weekend festival also included martial arts, Chinese knotting, dough sculpture, calligraphy and paper cutting, all with the purpose of improving mutual understanding and friendship among people of different cultures.
