FBI Admits Keeping Files on Two Bishops

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two Roman Catholic bishops who have been leading opponents of U.S. military policies have been subjects of FBI files, an independent Catholic newspaper reported.
The FBI admitted that it kept files on Seattle Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen and Detroit Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, the National Catholic Reporter said in Friday’s editions. “However, before release can be made, they must be reviewed to ascertain if they warrant classification under current standards,” the paper quoted the FBI as saying.
Gumbleton is head of the Catholic peace organization PAX Christi-USA. Hunthausen, a tax resister, has protested launching of nuclear submarines in Washington state.
