A committee of California health officials has delayed until May further consideration of controversial isolation guidelines for “recalcitrant” AIDS patients who persist in high-risk behaviors that may infect others with the deadly virus. The action came in San Francisco at the monthly meeting of the disease and epidemiology committee of the California Conference of Local Health Officers, which is drafting the guidelines. The health officers need additional time to revise the guidelines and take into account the objections of gay rights activists, according to Dr. Carl Smith, health officer of Alameda County and chairman of the committee.
