“Black Tanner” (Switzerland, 1986, 12:30 p.m.). In a remote Swiss mountain village during World War II, Kasper Tanner, a stern patriarch, defies government authorities who insist he augment his dairy production by planting crops on the hillside. Is Tanner a hero or a fool? Writer-director Xavier Koller never decides, but the device of maintaining a steadfast ambivalence toward him reaps rich dramatic rewards despite an unsatisfying conclusion. The film was Switzerland’s foreign-language Oscar entry this year. Recommended.
