Sri Lankan troops are slowly advancing and extending their areas of control in the island’s rebel-dominated northern Jaffna Peninsula, National Security Minister Lalith Athulathmudali confirmed. But he denied reports that a major military offensive is under way against Tamil separatist guerrillas. A spokesman for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the major Tamil rebel group defending Jaffna, said Sri Lankan air force planes and helicopters launched attacks on residential areas about five miles from the city of Jaffna, killing five civilians and injuring 15.
