Meese Urges Law Officers to Wear Gloves

SUN VALLEY, Ida. — Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III has urged law officers to take precautions against AIDS by wearing gloves when dealing with those in high-risk groups such as intravenous drug users and prostitutes.
“These types are more likely than the average citizen to come in contact with law enforcement officers,” creating a tremendous potential for spread of the AIDS virus, Meese told the National Executive Institute and Major City Police Chiefs Training Conference on Wednesday.
Meese also stressed the need for the public to abandon the idea that the AIDS epidemic is “some type of political matter,” and recognize it as “the public health problem it is.”
Police in Washington, D.C., used plastic gloves during the weekend arrests of people protesting the Reagan Administration response to the AIDS epidemic.
