A painting of a Swedish baron on a rearing horse by the British master George Stubbs sold for a record $2.4 million Friday at Sotheby’s in New York--the highest ever for a painting with a sporting-theme, an auction official said. “Baron de Robeck Riding a Bay Cob” was sold to an anonymous American collector. The sale price was more than double the $1.01 million fetched by John Frederick Herring Sr.’s “Doncaster Cup of 1838” at Sotheby’s in London last year.
