School officials rededicated an elementary school in Compton to the memory of one of the seven astronauts killed in the Challenger space shuttle explosion. About 500 teachers, parents, students and public officials gathered for the ceremony, in which El Segundo Elementary School was renamed Dr. Ronald E. McNair Jr. Elementary School. McNair, who toured Compton schools during their “Career Day” in 1984, was remembered by the Rev. Elliot Mason as a “role model for all of us, and especially for the youth.” Mayor Walter R. Tucker presented a key to the city to McNair’s widow, Cheryl McNair, who attended with her two small children and her parents.
