More Madrid Hostals

I agree with the Arlow and Baranowski view of Madrid’s Hotel Londres (Letters, June 14). However, the article was about hostals, not hotels. Other three-star hostal choices: Hispano America Hostal Residencia, Gran Via 63 (request a room in the rear and specify a full bath), or Hostal Florida Marquis de Cubas 25 (across from American Express). Motel-like furnishings, but both are clean and bright. 1987 prices, $20-$30 double.
If it’s charm and amenities you want, skip the above and head for the Hotel Arosa off the Gran Via at Calle Salud 21. For about $70 a night double (1987), this four-star, non-touristy hotel will please even the finicky. And you don’t have to leave the hotel for breakfast. The abundant buffet is 545 pesetas and worth every penny.
