WORCESTER, Mass. — A 92-year-old doctor who has practiced in the city since 1923, looking after thousands of patients for free, says he is being driven into retirement by malpractice insurance.
“It doesn’t pay for me to take out malpractice insurance for the sum of $6,000,” said Dr. Mervin Fossner, who took down the sign advertising his office hours Wednesday, the day a state law requiring malpractice insurance went into effect.
“I never had it. There was no need of it,” Fossner said. “I don’t do any surgery and, when I did surgery and obstetrics, you didn’t have to have it.”
