A Whittier man died Monday morning after the delivery truck he was driving slammed into the rear of a 90-ton crane truck, the California Highway Patrol said.
Witnesses at the scene said Jesus Salas Hernandez, 29, was southbound on the Santa Ana Freeway at 5 a.m. Monday, apparently traveling at 80 m.p.h., when he switched into the No. 4 lane and rear-ended the crane truck, CHP Officer Elfido Montez said.
The crane truck had just entered the freeway from Main Street in Santa Ana and was traveling about 30 m.p.h. in the slow lane. When he struck the crane, Hernandez’s truck spun off the freeway through shrubbery and a perimeter fence, Montez said.
Firefighters had to cut into the truck to free Hernandez, who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
