Commercial fishing in one of Alaska’s richest red salmon waters was halted because a crude oil spill has contaminated tons of the catch. An emergency order by Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game advised commercial fishermen to pull their nets and stop fishing. Sport fishermen who crowd Kenai Peninsula salmon streams had been allowed to continue fishing but were told to examine their catch for oil. Seven tons of fish that passed cursory inspections for oil had to be taken from processing facilities as contaminated, a spokeswoman said. There may be twice that amount of salmon tainted by the 130,000 gallons of crude that leaked into Cook Inlet July 2 from the 774-foot tanker Glacier Bay, she said.
