Gunmen Kill Peruvian Governor, 2 Others

LIMA, Peru — Gunmen, presumed to be Maoist rebels, forced their way into the home of the governor of the impoverished Andean state of Apurimac and killed him, his son and a guard, an aide said Tuesday.
The killing of Gov. Gilbert Urbiola Valer marked the highest-level murder of a member of President Alan Garcia’s ruling party since January. More than 230 members of the center-left party have been killed by Shining Path rebels since Garcia took office in July, 1985.
