Tensions remained high in Haiti as most businesses in Port-au-Prince stayed closed during the second day of the latest anti-government strike. In Gonaives, 110 miles north of the capital, troops fired in the air to disperse a crowd of strikers, witnesses said. The strike, aimed in part at forcing the military-led government to resign, was called by the public transport drivers’ union to protest a rise in gasoline prices over the weekend. Meanwhile, high school students launched a nationwide boycott of final exams to protest the government’s use of violence to quell opposition. The country has been hit by a series of violent strikes.
