Dow Soars 44.64 to a Record 2,680 on Huge Volume

Stock prices soared in extremely heavy trading Tuesday, two days before the fifth anniversary of the start of the current bull market.
The Dow Jones average of 30 industrial stocks climbed 44.64 points to a record closing high of 2,680.48. Volume on the New York Stock Exchange was 278.13 million shares, second only to the historic high of 302.39 million shares traded on Jan. 23.
Blue-chip stocks like those that make up the Dow average were especially sought after, but buying was spread throughout the market. Foreign investors reportedly were a strong force.
Analysts said no particular news or development triggered Tuesday’s frenzied trading and that it resulted from investors’ fears of missing out on the rally and from the market’s momentum building on itself.
