A Stanford University sculpture of two gay couples, intended as a monument to gay riots in New York that sparked the gay liberation movement in 1969, has been defaced by vandals who spray-painted the word AIDS on it. A grounds worker at the university reported finding the markings last week on the outdoor sculpture, titled “Gay Liberation.” The sculpture was the work of New York artist George Segal. It was placed at Stanford in 1984.
