Uganda has offered temporary asylum to ousted Burundian President Jean-Baptiste Bagaza because his nation’s new military junta will not allow him to return home, said a Ugandan Cabinet minister, who declined to be identified. “He was desperate. He had nowhere to go. He was refused permission to fly into Bujumbura (the Burundian capital),” the official said. Bagaza, 41, was overthrown Thursday while attending a meeting in Canada. He left immediately but was unable to get back to his central African nation of 5 million people. It was made clear that Bagaza was not being given permanent asylum.
