Tennis Roundup : Annacone Ousts Edberg in Upset

Paul Annacone upset Sweden’s Stefan Edberg, 6-2, 6-3, Friday, eliminating the world’s No. 2-ranked tennis player from the $500,000 AT&T; Challenge exhibition tournament at Atlanta.

The victory lifted Annacone’s record in the round-robin phase of the event to 2-1, giving him a spot in today’s semifinals.

“I felt that mentally I was more eager to win the match than Stefan,” said Annacone, who is ranked No. 41.

Top-ranked Ivan Lendl and Jimmy Connors are also in the semifinals, and John McEnroe went for the last spot in a match against Sweden’s Mikael Pernfors. Connors was to play Ulf Stenlund later, but his 2-0 mark already assured him of a berth.

Lendl beat Miloslav Mecir, 6-0, 6-4, to give him a round-robin record of 3-0.

Edberg finished with a 1-2 record.

Australia’s John Frawley scored a stunning 6-4, 6-3 victory over Wimbledon champion Pat Cash to advance to the semifinals of the $150,000 Queensland Open at Brisbane, Australia.

Cash, also of Australia, was seeded No. 1.

It was the 28th consecutive victory for Frawley, 22, who had previously played Cash only in junior competition and hadn’t beaten him.

In other matches, New Zealand’s Kelly Evernden beat India’s Ramesh Krishnan, 7-6, 6-1; West Germany’s Eric Jelen defeated Australia’s John Fitzgerald, 7-5, 6-3, and Marcel Freeman ousted Australia’s Brod Dyke, 6-3, 7-6.

At Basel, Switzerland, France’s Yannick Noah defeated Spain’s Sergio Casal, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, in the quarterfinals of the $239,000 Swiss Indoor tournament.

In other matches, France’s Guy Forget beat Switzerland’s Claudio Mezzadri, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, and Yugoslavia’s Slobodan Zivojinovic ousted Uruguay’s Diego Perez, 6-2, 6-4.

West Germany’s Steffi Graf defeated France’s Catherine Tanvier, 6-3, 6-0, in the semifinals of a $110,000 tournament at Mainz, West Germany. In today’s final, Graf will play Bulgaria’s Manuela Maleeva, who defeated Elise Burgin, 6-1, 6-1.
