A one-yard dive by Fountain Valley High School senior running back Derek Tuescher with 19 seconds left in the first half was enough to carry the Barons to a 7-3 win over Long Beach Poly Friday night in a nonleague game at Huntington Beach High School.
The victory was the Barons’ first in five games.
Tuescher’s score was set up by an offsides penalty against the Jackrabbits on fourth and goal at the six. The penalty came after the Barons had lined up for a field goal attempt by Derek Mahoney to tie the game.
Long Beach scored first on a 42-yard field goal by Adam Scolaro at the start of the second quarter.
Baron Coach Mike Milner said it was time his team let the opponents make mistakes. “We played better football and didn’t make the mistakes we’ve made all year,” he said. “This is the win we needed going into (Sunset) league next week.”
The Baron quarterback, junior David Henigan, completed 12 of 19 passes for 143 yards. Tuescher caught four of the passes.
The Fountain Valley defense held the Jackrabbits to three first downs in the second half, two in the last minute.
