San Diego’s Isler Wins Keelboat Title

NEWPORT, R.I. — J.J. Isler of San Diego won the women’s international keelboat championship Friday by one point, even though she did not finish the last of seven races.
Isler built a big lead in the first six races earlier this week. In the final race, she attempted to block the wind from the keelboat of Nancy Haberland. Because of the tactic, Isler fell far behind the rest of the 44-boat fleet and abandoned the race as soon as her overall victory was secure.
Cory Fischer of Annapolis, Md., won the seventh race and finished second overall. Haberland, of Newport, R.I., finished third overall.
Isler won a crystal bowl and the right to compete for the world J-24 championship this winter in the waters off Australia.
